For many people, stress is unavoidable. Our daily lives are hectic and filled with other people who can sometimes cause emotional pain, anxiety, and mood changes, not to mention the many events and situations that we have no control over. However, just because stress is a daily part of life doesn’t mean we have to accept it. Knowing how to prevent and beat it can mean the difference between enjoying life and having high blood pressure, migraines, back pain, and a weakened immune system.
Because stress and anxiety can also lead to lack of sleep and unhealthy responses such as substance abuse and overeating, it’s important to remember that there are things you can do to prevent them. Here are a few of the best tips on living your best life.
Exercise regularly
Getting in a regular workout can help you reduce stress levels and amp up your endorphins, leaving you with a satisfied feeling that can help you get through the day. Go for an early morning run or practice yoga in the sand if you’re lucky enough to live near the beach. In fact, yoga is a good idea no matter where you live; it’s easy to do in many locations–just pack up a mat and you’re good to go–and allows you to practice mindfulness, a form of meditation that will help you focus on the present and let go of the worries you shoulder during a given day.
Swimming is another great stress-busting exercise; it allows you to use your entire body, the feel of the water is soothing, and you can focus on your breathing and movements rather than that report due at work.
Solve what you can and let go of the rest
A lot of stress comes from taking on too much at once. Think hard about your responsibilities and where most of your stress comes from; is it work-related? Coming from your relationship or home life? Remember that you can’t fix everything and focus on one thing at a time to keep from getting overwhelmed. It’s also important to ask for help now and then, no matter how much you may want to do everything on your own.
Don’t let the little things get to you
Sometimes it’s the little things that get to us, like sitting in traffic or having to make several small trips to the grocery store for forgotten items. Plan ahead and get organized; this can help you avoid stressful situations that lead to big meltdowns later. If possible, plan your schedule so that you can take the scenic route to or from work now and then. It might take you a bit longer to get to your destination, but you’ll get to enjoy the view and hopefully avoid rush-hour craziness.
Treat yourself
You may not always be able to pamper yourself, but every once in awhile, make an effort to do something just for you. Splurge on some new clothing or add to your record collection; buy tickets to that show you really want to see. Doing little things to make yourself happy can go a long way toward keeping a healthy attitude and leaving stress at arm’s length.
