When thinking about leaving a gift in your Will, you’ll often see the word ‘estate’ used. This simply means anything that is legally your possession, from property and bank accounts to vehicles and jewellery. If you’re not sure about any terms we’ve used here, we’re happy to answer your questions and provide more information. Please feel free to call Mike Pastor on 07970 425134, or email mikepastor@mensmindsmatter.org

Leaving a share of your estate

Most supporters who leave a gift in their Will choose a ‘residuary gift.’ This means they set aside a percentage of their remaining assets after taking care of loved ones and financial commitments.

You can decide to leave a share to many charities, CICs, or other not for profit organisations. Alternatively you can gift the entire residue to one. You can also leave different percentages to different causes. This type of gift keeps up with inflation and ensures that the value of your gift persists over time. Example residuary wording:

  • “I give to Men’s Minds Matter a Community Interest Company (Company number: 8443338) of registered office address Bussey Building, 133 Rye Lane, Peckham Rye, London, SE15 4ST the whole of the residue/% share of the residue of my estate to be applied for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of the charity’s authorised person or other appropriate officer shall be a complete discharge to my executors.”

Leaving a set amount

Alternately, you can leave a specified sum of money to Men’s Minds Matter or, what’s often called a ‘pecuniary gift’. Though it is a good idea to review this kind of gift every so often as inflation can gradually reduce its value. Example pecuniary wording:

  • “I give to Men’s Minds Matter a Community Interest Company (Company number: 8443338) of registered office address Bussey Building, 133 Rye Lane, Peckham Rye, London, SE15 4ST the sum of _ pounds to be applied for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of the charity’s authorised person or other appropriate officer shall be a complete discharge to my executors.”

Additional wording

In addition, it would also be of great help to Men’s Minds Matter if you could include the following clause in your Will, which will ensure that your gift will still be effective if Men’s Minds Matter merges with another charity or changes its name:

  • “If at my death any charity named as a beneficiary in this Will or any Codicil hereto has changed its name or amalgamated with or transferred its assets to another body then my executors shall give effect to any gift made to such charity as if it had been made (in the first case) to the body in its changed name or (in the second place) to the body which results from such amalgamation or to which such transfer has been made.”

If you already have a Will but would like to amend it to include Men’s Minds Matter, you can ask your solicitor for a Codicil. This is a short document you can use to make a small change to your Will (like adding a gift) without having to re-write the whole document.

We always advise you to speak to a solicitor before making a Will or adding a Codicil. They will be best placed to explain the ways you can leave a legacy to Men’s Minds Matter. The Law Society can help you find a probate solicitor in your area.
